The Port: It's happening

Role

Recently completed Marina Cove Precinct, Newport Quays, comprising more than 220 dwellings and home to 400+ residents

Peter Moorefield is participating in the revitalisation of the Port with his $20 million 'The Anchorage' residential development.

A range of major projects in and around Port Adelaide is underpinning its revitalisation, including:

  • Newport Quays – a $2 billion urban redevelopment project transforming 50 hectares of waterfront land over a 10 year period into homes, marinas, offices, restaurants, cafés, parks and promenade walks for more than 4,000 new residents.
  • Transport Infrastructure – completion of the $180m Port River Bridges and the Port River Expressway.
  • Techport Australia – development and expansion of Australia’s premier naval industry hub at nearby Osborne, home to the $8 billion Air Warfare Destroyer construction project and other shipbuilding and repair opportunities.
  • Extension of light rail services from Adelaide's CBD to Port Adelaide and Semaphore – due for completion in 2018.
  • Under the State Government's proposed 30-year Plan for Greater Adelaide, the Port has been nominated as a priority location for new transit-oriented development activity – providing a concentrated mixture of uses at increased densities around transport nodes.

Around the Port Adelaide Centre new development is taking shape on every scale as fresh projects emerge from historic foundations or in locations which provide an opportunity to refurbish buildings to their natural 19th and 20th Century splendour.

Residents and business operators see Port Adelaide as a regional hub with a unique character, full of potential and with an exciting future as its population grows and it becomes the focus of ongoing public and private investment.

Our Role

The Port Partnership, using a 'place management' approach, is working with stakeholders to develop and implement strategies for the social and economic rejuvenation within the Port Adelaide Centre and Semaphore Road.

The key functions of the Port Partnership include:

  • attracting new business and investment to the area
  • marketing and promoting the Port, including its many tourism attractions
  • supporting event and festival activity
  • assessing future infrastructure requirements
  • community capacity building

The Port Partnership is committed to working in partnership with the community to ensure that local considerations, including the area's unique heritage character, are considered in the area's revitalisation.

Key recommendations of the document are now being progressed and include the completion of:

  • Extensive public events calendar for the Port Adelaide Centre, based around the Port River waterfront and Black Diamond Square.
  • A Public Domain Manual for the Port Adelaide Centre to guide the selection of public domain materials and elements such as paving, street furniture, lighting and landscaping.
  • Concept Plans for St Vincent Street and Commercial Road to guide the future upgrading of these key roads. The St Vincent St & Commercial Rd Concept Plan, July 2007 report presents work done to date on this project. More detailed plans will be developed as the project progresses and will be made available for review and comment.
  • A Development Plan Amendment (DPA) to update and enhance the zoning policies of the Port Adelaide Centre Zone. The revised Port Adelaide Centre DPA has been endorsed by Council and the Minister of Planning and has been consolidated into the Port Adelaide Enfield Development Plan.

There's still much more to be done and the Port Partnership is working with key stakeholders to advance the many recommendations and realise the vision.

Bringing New Life to the Port Centre

What's the vision for the Port? How might the Port look in ten or twenty years' time?  In 2005, the Government of South Australia and Council commissioned document to guide the future development of the Port Centre.

After extensive research, community consultation and analysis the Port Adelaide Centre Vision and Framework (6.9mb PDF) has been prepared as a pivotal document to help guide Council, Government and private sector decision making in the Port Centre for the next 25 years. A summary version(1.3mb PDF) of the Port Adelaide Centre Vision and Framework is also available.

The City of Port Adelaide Enfield has endorsed the Port Adelaide Centre Vision and Framework as a basis for future budget considerations, ongoing negotiations with Government agencies to assist with the revitalisation of the Port Adelaide Centre and guidance to the business and general community.
