Community views sought on historic port precincts

16 December 2009

Deputy Premier and Member for Port Adelaide Kevin Foley says extensive community consultation into future uses of parts of historic Port Adelaide will enter a new phase early next year.

Mr Foley today announced the appointment of a major international consulting firm to prepare the master plan for the McLaren Wharf precinct and Cruickshank's Corner.

The winning consultant for McLaren Wharf and Cruickshank's Corner is technical and property firm GHD Pty Ltd, which has a significant presence in South Australia having been established in Adelaide 11 years ago and now employing about 200 staff across the State.

The tender was called by the South Australian Government's Land Management Corporation (LMC) and the City of Port Adelaide Enfield.

Among the sub-consultancies that will be working with GHD is Village Well, an Australian company that is renowned worldwide as an expert at working with communities to create liveable and commercially-viable environments and places.

"It is vital to the future of Port Adelaide that the McLaren Wharf precinct and Cruickshank's Corner come alive with workers, visitors and people who want to live close to everything a vibrant urban centre will have to offer," Mr Foley says.

"The consultants will engage widely with the community who live and make their living around the Port as well as property owners and potential investors to transform McLaren Wharf and Cruickshank's Corner into unique and attractive places that people will want to be."

"We expect the master plan report for McLaren Wharf and Cruickshank's Corner to be completed by mid-2010," Mr Foley says.

The McLaren Wharf precinct incorporates McLaren Wharf, Queens Wharf and North Parade Wharf and a portion of the Port Adelaide State Heritage policy area that includes the Customs House and connections to the Port Centre.

Cruickshank's Corner comprises a section of land on the northern bank of the Port River between the Birkenhead Bridge and new Port River Expressway railway bridge (Mary MacKillop Bridge).
